The Robotic Arm Camera is a collaborative effort between the German Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy and the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. A duplicate of this camera, with a few design modifications, will fly on the 2001 Mars Lander.

The RAC will

1. Provide close-up images of the surface in the vicinity of the lander;

2. Assist Robotic Arm (RA) operations by imaging prospective surface samples;

3. Obtain close-up images of the floor and side-walls of the trench dug by the RA;
