The Winona meteorite was discovered in 1928 in a stone cyst at pueblo ruins near Winona. The Winona meteorite is classified as an achondrite, which means it was melted or partially melted to produce an igneous rock. Winona is also the first sample of a class of meteorites now called winonaites. Several other meteorites are thought to have formed under similar conditions on the same planetary body - they are all called winonaites.
