Dr. Robert Kursinski
Associate Professor, Atmospheric Sciences and Planetary
Sciences/LPL
Ph.D. California Institute of Technology, 1997
Robert Kursinski joined the University of Arizona's Institute of
Atmospheric Physics in 2000, and he was given a joint appointment in
Planetary Sciences/LPL in 2002. Before coming to Tucson, he had a
productive early career at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he
received numerous technical innovation, service, and group achievement
awards for his work on various radio science teams.
In addition to his work on NASA Mars exploration, Dr. Kursinski is at the
forefront in using GPS technology to remotely sense the atmosphere of the
Earth and to develop an improved understanding of weather and climate. He
works on non-GPS remote sensing technology as well, and is involved in
developing new NOAA, as well as NASA, environmental remote sensing
satellites and sensors. His atmospheric observing work is also being
integrated into large-scale data assimilation efforts.
Some of Dr. Kursinski's current projects include sensing water vapor and
ozone via radio occultation and the assimilation of GPS meteorological
data into weather and climate analyses. He also has plans to study water
vapor feedback by assessing how moisture is controlled in the subtropics
and upper troposphere.
