Graduate Application for Admission

Applying to the LPL graduate program For full consideration, applications for the Fall term should be received by January 15. Only complete applications will be considered. Applicants are expected to have strong preparation and exceptional academic achievement in physical or mathematical science. The Admissions Committee uses transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation to evaluate applicants. Most admitted students are awarded financial support in the form of research or teaching assistantships. A limited number of Graduate College Fellowships are also available on a competitive basis; all applicants to the Department will be considered as candidates for such awards.
  1. Prospective students must apply both to the Graduate College of the University of Arizona and to the Department of Planetary Sciences. Applications to the Graduate College are available online. There is an application fee. Detailed information about this application process is available from the Graduate College.
  2. Prospective students must supply the following information directly to the Department of Planetary Sciences:
  • a photocopy of the Graduate College application form
  • the departmental Supplementary Application form 
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for the verbal, analytical, and quantitative sections. You must request that the Education Testing Service send your official scores directly to the Department of Planetary Sciences. The code for the Department of Planetary Sciences is 0806. The University of Arizona institution code is R4832.
  • three (3) letters of recommendation sent by the reference directly to the Department of Planetary Sciences. Your references should comment on your qualifications and promise for a career in planetary science.
  • for each letter of recommendation, one signed copy of the Recommendation for Admission coversheet
  • the departmental application for graduate assistantship
  • official copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended
  • a listing of your research experience
  • a list of scientific papers you have written or papers to which you have contributed
