Research associates contribute greatly to the intellectual vigor of the department, interacting with students while being mentored by faculty toward permanent science careers. Mentoring of young scientists continues through postdoctoral research associates and senior research associates. The quality of Planetary Sciences research associates is further indicated by the number who have been awarded independent national research grants.
