How do I configure my email client to use SSL for incoming mail?


These instructions assume that you have already used your email client program
to create either an IMAP or POP account (preferably IMAP),
with incoming server = hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu


Outlook 2000 (PC)

1.      Click on the Tools menu and select Accounts.

2.      If needed, change the Incoming mail server name to hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu.

3.      Click on the Mail tab and highlight the email account you wish to change, then click on Properties.

4.      Click on the Advanced tab.

5.      Check the box next to “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)” for the Incoming server.

Note: If the Incoming port number does not change, change it to 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP.


Outlook 2003 (PC)

1.      Start Outlook 2003.

2.      Click on the Tools menu and select E-mail Accounts.

3.      Select View or change existing email accounts.

4.      Click on Next.

5.      Highlight the email account you wish to edit.

6.      Click on Change.

7.      If needed, change the Incoming mail server name to hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu.

8.      Click on More Settings.

10.      Click on the Advanced tab.

11.  Check the box next to “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)” for the Incoming server. Change the Incoming server port number to 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP if needed.

12.  Click on OK.

13.  Click on Next.

14.  Click on Finish.


Outlook 2007 (PC)

1.      Start Outlook 2007.

2.      Click on the Tools menu and select Options.

3.      Click the Mail Setup tab.

4.      Click the Send/Receive button.

5.      Click the Edit button.

6.      Click the Account Properties button.

8.      Click the Advanced tab.

9.      Under Incoming Server, click the pull-down menu next to “Use the following type of encrypted connection,” and choose SSL (The Port number automatically changes to 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.)

11.      Click OK, then click OK again.

12.      Click Close.

13.      Click OK.

Note: If the Incoming port number does not change, change it to 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.


Outlook Express

1.      Start MS Outlook Express.

2.      Click on the Tools menu and select Accounts.

3.      Select the appropriate account.

4.      Click on Properties.

5.      Click the Servers tab.

6.      Make sure the Incoming server name is hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu

7.      Click on the Advanced tab.

8.      Check the box next to “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)” for the Incoming server.

9.      Click OK.

10.  Click Close.

Note: If the Incoming port number does not change, change it to 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.


Thunderbird (Windows)

1.      Select Tools from the main Thunderbird menu.

2.      Select Account Settings.

3.      From the left pane under Account Settings, select Server Settings.

4.      In the Security and Authentication box under “Use secure connection,” click on SSL.

5.      Make sure the "Use secure authentication" box is not checked.

6.      From the left pane under Account Settings, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

7.      Click Edit.

8.      In the Security and Authentication box, under “Use secure connection,” click on TLS.

9.      Click OK.


Thunderbird (MAC OS 10.x)

1.      Select Tools from the main Thunderbird menu.

2.      Select Account Settings.

2.      From the left pane, select Server Settings.

4.      Under “Server Settings,” check Use secure connection (SSL).

7.      Click OK.


Netscape

1.      Start Netscape.

2.      Click on the Edit menu and select Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings.

3.      Under your email account, click on Server Settings.

4.      In the right pane, enable Use Secure connection (SSL).

7.      Click OK.


Entourage 2004

Note: Entourage supports Secure Sockets (SSL) beginning with version 2004 (Version 11.1). If you are running a version older than 2004, you must upgrade to the latest version of Entourage to enable SSL.

1.      Choose Tools, then choose Accounts.

2.      Highlight the account to edit and click Edit.

3.      Click the Account Settings tab.

4.      Under “Receiving Mail”, click on Click here for advanced receiving options.

5.      Check the box next to This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL) and click Close.

6.      Click OK.

7.      Exit Entourage and restart.


OS X Mail Client (MAC Mail) IMAP

1.       In OS X Mail, click Mail, then Preferences.

2.       Click on the Account tab. The Account Information window appears.

3.       Check to make sure that the Incoming Server name is hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu.

8.       Click on the Advanced tab.

9.       At the bottom of the Advanced tabbed page, make sure the option Use SSL is checked and that the number in the “Port” text box is 993.

10.   Close the Account Preferences Account window. Choose Save when prompted.

11.   Quit OS X Mail (MAC Mail) and then re-start the program. SSL is now enabled.

 

OS X Mail Client (MAC Mail) POP

1.       In OS X Mail, click Mail, then Preferences.

2.       Click the Account tab. The Account Information window appears.

3.       Check to make sure that the Incoming Server name is hindmost.lpl.arizona.edu.

4.       Click on the Advanced tab.

5.       At the bottom of the Advanced tabbed page, make sure the option Use SSL is checked and that the number in the “Port” text box is 995.

6.       Close the Account Preferences Account window. Choose Save when prompted.

7.       Quit OS X Mail (MAC Mail) and then re-start the program. SSL is now enabled.
