RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Hood's research currently focuses on planetary and atmospheric physics.

The atmospheric work is aimed primarily toward understanding effects of solar variability on the stratosphere and troposphere-ocean system. In the stratosphere, solar ultraviolet variations and energetic particle precipitation perturb ozone, temperature, and dynamics. Research in this area involves analyses of satellite remote sensing measurements on both short and decadal time scales.
Recent work focuses on the role of the stratosphere in producing detectable surface climate responses to 11-yr solar forcing during northern winter. Long-term variability of stratospheric ozone, including separation of anthropogenic and natural sources of variability, is also a topic of long-standing interest.

The planetary work currently focuses mainly on evaluating the origin of lunar crustal paleomagnetism. This involves analyses of orbital measurements for two main purposes: (1) understanding the origins of observed magnetic anomalies; and (2) constraining the history and duration of the former lunar core dynamo. Orbital measurements that are currently being analyzed include those obtained with instruments on the Lunar Prospector (1997), Kaguya (2008), and GRAIL (2011) spacecraft. This work has provided supporting evidence that a core dynamo existed during the early (Nectarian) epoch. Work is continuing to investigate the persistence of the dynamo into the Imbrian and Copernican epoch. The work has also provided strong evidence that major basin-forming impacts played an important role in producing the strongest crustal magnetic anomalies.
