Graduation para Mi!
I was inspired by Amy to post some pictures of my graduation seeing that Mom, Dad, and Aly were the only ones there, and as such, they are my favorite family members. From the looks of it Amy's graduation was good weather. Wish I could say the same. It was cloudy and freezing. I sat front row, curse of the "A's". I did pretty good to sit with the smart kids. 3.89 and high honors, everyone was surprised i was smart. By the time we had the party it was sunny and hot. You got to love Colorado, can never pick a temperature. It was a blast though. At the party we had a Jumping Castle...mmm... I wish you all could have been there with me.
HPIM2824.JPG Me sitting front row. Go team! I had to pretend i was interested because everyone could see me.
HPIM2821.JPG This is everyone. If you look closely you'll see aly in the choir. probably not.
HPIM2868.JPG My favorite people. Me of course, Mom, Smalls, and Laura, who is family now.
HPIM2912.JPG JUMPING CASTLE. These are my best friends, except smalls isn't in it. Court and Laur. Aren't we just precious!

Graduation
Hey everyone!
I figured since I'm the only one from my family that's signed up to this thing, I should put a page out there. Well, school's finally out, and I'm ready to go to college. I'll be the first cousin (I think) to actually go to the University of Utah, the school of which our family members are such big fans. So I'm glad to carry that on to the next generation. Anyway, I'm pretty excited; it should be really fun. I'm working this summer at, where else, American Eagle, my favorite store in the whole world (well, one of them.) Anyway, I gotta run, but here's a few pictures of me at graduation.
Sorry they're so big, but I don't know how to fix it. Anyway, this picture is a picture of me and two of my friends, Kristi and Melissa.
This next picture is one of me and my parents at graduation.
This one is of me and my sisters.

No Speak-a any English
Each day I go to work, I work with a good portion of my class, at one point did not speak any English to limited very English. Now many of them are speaking really well. But these children learn English through their daily interaction between their peers and teachers. Sara is in the exact opposite situation where she is the one that speaks limited Chinese. So it became intriguing to be how she is teaching English. I was chatting with Sara online earlier tonight before she had to run to class. I asked her some questions about teaching in China. Questions such as if she had her own classroom... she replied she did, but that it was very small and it just had plain white walls and it was much like a cell. I asked her of the age(s) of her students. She replied that they were between 4 and 8 years old. Now my biggest question is... how do they teach these kids English? In a bare room with white walls?? How is English taught to these kids? Are the four year olds mixed in with the kids that are older?? Do the kids sit in chairs for 2 1/2 hours? Its not Developmenatlly Apporpriate Practice for a child any child between the ages of 4 and 8 to sit on a chair for 2 1/2 hours. Anyhow Sara... you must give me your mailing address. I am going to send you some fun lessons you could easily implement into your curriculum that would make it more developmentally appropriate for these children. Also Check out this website... www.AtoZteacherstuff.com there is some good stuff on that website. Also www.preschoolprintables.com .... Do you have access to a printer? Give me some more details...I am very intrested to learn more.

Explaining the car pictures
So when I posted the pictures of our poor car, I figured that everyone had already heard the story of Sara's accident a couple of months ago. But since that doesn't seem to be the case, I'll add a quick explanation.
So the week before Sara left she went to Utah to visit roommates and friends, etc. Her last night there, she was dropping someone off in Springville, was stopped at a light, and got rear-ended by some 21-year old idiot who wasn't paying attention because he was looking for a CD or something. So she was stopped and he was going over 40 mph. He hit Sara and killed our car, she hit the car in front of her, who hit the car in front of them. So this one guy caused a 4 car accident. Sara was ok (she ended up going to the doctor in Denver just to make sure) and the guy she was giving a ride home went to the hospital but was fine. The airbags deployed, etc, and the trunk was totally demolished.
I am impressed by how the car was engineered; you can actually see the crumple zones at the end of the passenger area of the car. Everything beyond that is crushed, but where the people are looks fine. Which is exactly what's supposed to happen. But the car was totalled. So we got a new car (well, a newer car) with a cool GPS thing inside it so we'll never get lost again (right). That's the story.

Some Truths about Teaching 3 year Olds
Hi Archers,
This year as my first year as a lead teacher I have learned a whole lot. Like for example the one year age diffrence between three year olds and four year olds there is a major diffrence. That is where the Toddler Property Laws which are soo true... fall into place.
Toddler Property Laws
If I like it, its mine
If it's in my hand, its mine.
If I can take it from you, its mine.
If I had it little awhile ago, its mine.
If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in anyway.
If I am foing or building something, all the pieces are mine.
If it just looks like mine, its mine.
If I saw it first, its mine.
If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine.
If it's broken, its yours.
I just recently turned in my letter of Intent for next year. I have requested to return to Lincoln for another year, but I didn't request to have a three year old class. Three year olds are very difficult! One year of three year olds is enough to scare any weak first year teacher off. But Jessica is not weak... so there for I am going back for round two, but with out three year olds hopefully. I don't plan on staying at Lincoln after next year though. My next goal will be to become a model teacher at the model school by the 2006-07 School year. Teaching young Children is my love and passion in life.

I gotta say I'm impressed with the engineering of the car. Note the crumple zones at the end of the trunk space.

Another Sara china pic. Doug: I can't tell if this means don't drive with a cell phone, or don't take a dump with a cell phone. You decide.

Teenager Killed in Chase Down Big Cottonwood CanyonMar 4, 2005 8:11 am US/Mountain
A teenage girl is dead and a man in critical condition after a high speed chase ended with a violent crash. It all began Thursday night when a sheriff’s deputy noticed some suspicious activity and approached a Ford Taurus parked near the top of Guardsman Pass.“He thought the activity was a little suspicious. They were kind of ducking down,” said Sergeant Paul Garoscak of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.Scott Hall, 41, and Jessica Archer, 16, sped away from officers in the car.Deputies guessed the driver was going about 85 miles per hour. They say they couldn't safely keep up and didn't see the car cross the center line and smash head-on into a van. “The deputies did say they would come around corners and see smoke and dirt flying. So these people were obviously were not just on their own side of the road,” Sergeant Garoscak said. The pair was flown to hospital, both in critical condition. Archer later died from her injuries.Everyone in the van walked away from the accident uninjured.Investigators still don't know why the man didn't pull over.

Hello Family!
Hello everyone, its Aly! I'm just signing in to say hi. Things are good here in Colorado. I am in the school musical, Oklahoma!, as a "featured dancer." We started rehearsals 2 Fridays ago and it has been tons of fun already. But because of it I can't go to dance as much which kind of makes me sad. But its worth it! well, I can't really dance a lot anyways because I hurt my tailbone again haha. Anyways, this is right before Sara left at the airport. That was kind of sad, but exciting at the same time. It's just Kristie and I again and the house is a lot cleaner and quieter. But I'll let sara tell you about China. Anyways, i love you all and i'll post more later.

Welcome to the Archer Family Blog!
Well hello family members! Welcome to the Archer family webpage/blog. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions by emailing me at doug.archer@gmail.com.
This webpage allows you to start new threads, comment on old ones, and even post pictures, though make sure your pictures aren't much bigger than 1024 x 768 (~500 kb), or they will look really, really big.
To get things started, let me tell you a little bit about what I've been up to.
Things are going well for me here in Tucson at the University of Arizona. I am pursuing a PhD in Planetary Science, which should occupy me for about the next four years of my life. My classes are interesting, though I'm looking forward to finishing them up in a few more semesters, then just concentrating on research. My ultimate goal is to work for NASA and be involved with the human space exploration effort; specifically, I want to help get people to Mars.
Grad school may not be a very high paying occupation, but it can take me to exotic places every once in a while, like to Waikiki Beach in Honolulu for example. Here is a picture of me in Hawaii about a month ago:

Fun, huh? I was there for an astrobiology conference, learning about weird life on earth and the possibility of life on other planets. And the best thing was the trip was all expenses paid. So thank you NASA. I also had the wonderful experience of getting up close and personal with some liquid hot "magma"(said in the voice of Dr. Evil), here is a picture of that:

If you've never seen lava, next time you go to Hawaii, don't miss the chance, it was well worth the hike!
Other than that, I do have one picture of family interest that hopefully you will all appreciate. Though I'm glad to have finished the whole BYU experience, I'm sad to have missed Utah Football's phenomenal year. To keep up with the team, I was a regular in Tucson area sports bars, where I watched every game of the season minus the Utah State game, which wasn't broadcast, and the Wyoming game, which had technical difficulties. So to close out the football season and start 2005 off right, dad and I made the trip to Tempe to cheer on the Utes. Though it may not have been as close a game as the Rose Bowl, the 70,000 Utah fans, including the Archer's, thoroughly enjoyed the rout. Here is a picture of a couple of handsome devils at the end of the game:

Well, I think that's enough for now. Again, feel free to comment on the blog itself, the staff in our complaint department will get right on any suggestions you may have. And please, feel even more free to start posting your own goings on and pictures to the website. This can be a great way to keep tabs on everyone and as it is automatically archived, will represent a great collection of Archer family memories. And with that . . . . blog away!
