The Living Land is the name which has been given to the reality which has invaded North America. It is a primitive reality, where anything much more complicated than a spear is likely to fail.

In the first days of the invasion, the Living Land seemed unstoppable; as the strange armies of edeinos moved forward, all the technology over huge expanses of territory would suddenly fail, and discipline would shatter. It was in this fashion that most of New England fell, including Washington D.C., smashing the US government as thoroughly as any nuclear war ever could.

In those early days, resistance seemed hopeless. Our bombers could fly overhead, but couldn't see through the Deep Mist, and when they dropped bombs, they might as well have been dropping rocks. In fact, for a while, that's what they did.

Eventually, though, the US Armed Forces began to learn the tricks of fighting the edeinos. 1) Don't let anyone out. 2) Watch for troop massing by sending in scouts regularly. 3) If you find a troop buildup, hit it with everything possible, including rocks from bombers. 4) Keep the bulk of your forces _well_ back from the stormfront.

These tactics haven't worked perfectly, but they've done a pretty good job. And _someone_ has been having more success than just that. The 'Miracle of Sacramento' reclaimed northern California, and the 'Northern Land' in the wilds of Canada was eliminated. A goodly portion of the Canadian Eastern Land has been whittled away as well.
