Gerard Etienne was a precocious child, a scientific prodigy, a true wunderkind. He blazed through school, including college and graduate school. After getting his doctorate, he began work at CERN, where his work was considered on the border between cutting-edge and over-the-edge.
Shortly before the invasion, he made a series of breakthroughs in what he called 'reality science'. Then the invasion hit, and technology went away. He found himself fighting the book-burners of the Inquisition before long, and when technology came back and the Church decided it _liked_ technology...well, GE and the Church were already confirmed enemies.
Joining the Resistance, GE was sent on a mission to follow a Church special agent, JF8, and stop him from doing whatever he was trying to do. In the process, he hooked up with the other characters. Eventually, they tracked down JF8 and killed him...but GE took a chip that JF8 had been using.
Later using this chip, he discovered it contained the spirit of a former Surete officer, and was being forced to serve the Church. It pointed GE to a friendly cyberdoc, where several members of the group got cyberware. Unforuntately, it turned out to be a trick: the chip actually held JF8's spirit, and the 'friendly' cyberdoc was in the pay of the Church. GE now had a bomb in his cortex, and there were homing devices in the others' new cyberware.
After some notable problems, GE finally subjected himself to a reality storm that transformed him into an Ayslish mage. Then, invoking a storm on the Spirit of JF8, he disposed of him.
Later, while on the run from some Church Police, GE was exposed to high levels of radiation and became ill. He submitted himself to therapy and left the group.
Much later, the therapy complete, he rejoined the group, but now serves primarily as technical support, not an active member.
