William Martin grew up in Arkansas, a bit far back into the woods. He showed a great deal of mechanical aptitude when he grew up, and moved easily into being a mechanic. He was such a good mechanic, in fact, that he made it into the world of professional race car driving. While testing some improvements he had made to a car he was working on, he was observed by an older racer who decided that he could be an excellent driver as well, and who helped him break into those ranks.
Racing NASCAR and such for many years, he was spending some time on the Formula One Grand Prix circuit in France when the invasion hit. There he began a violent rivalry with Roger LeGrand, another driver. After the invasion, he had a run-in with the Inquisition, but escaped France. He spent a while wandering from place to place, running supplies into the Living Land and such.
He eventually did some work for a Japanese company, running ATMs into the Living Land near Sacramento, only to have his employer, Mr. Ishikawa, try to kill him when the job was done. He went on the run and eventually hooked up with Fugitive Group C in the Land Below. With them, he ran into LeGrand a few more times.
Transformed to Cyberpapal reality, he gained a cybereye, which went away when he was transformed back to Core Earth. He was later poisoned by Mr. Tanaka (apparently as a result of his one-time Japanese employment), only to eventually be cured by some potions the group had acquired from Uthorion's castle. His missing eye was replaced by the blue, flawed, Eye of Sharn.
The potions he took caused some remarkable changes in him, which appear to be permanent. Among other things, he seems to be immune to fire, and incredibly strong and tough.
He has recently had a bit of a fling with Marie Chalmas.
Still more recently, he has discovered he bears a remarkable resemblance to Jack of the Royal Flush Gang.
