Description: Two of these objects have been found. Each of them is a small sphere, about 6 inches across, made of some transparent material. When tapped, they sound like relatively thin glass, but are not as fragile as that would suggest.
Suspended (by an unknown mechanism) in the middle of the sphere is a thin sliver of a substance that may be gold. Wider at one end than the other, it seems to be an arrow. The arrow is able to turn freely.
Circumstances Of Discovery: The first compass sphere was found while exploring the empty Forever City, located on a shelf in an empty house.
The second compass sphere was found in a bag belonging to Mintaka, after his apparent death at the hands of Professor Sharif. Also in the bag was the Golden Computer.
Function: Conversation with Arthur Tree revealed that these spheres were in fact tracking devices. They could be programmed either psychically (by someone with an appropriate skill) or mechanically (by appropriate equipment) to track either individuals or energy sources respectively.
The initial compass was set to track neutrinos; in general, this one pointed simply at the sun. The second one was set originally to track Thalchek, but reverted to a null setting after Thalchek's death.
Arthur Tree reset the second compass to track vril, the flow of possibility energy.
