Eclipse 2012

Expedition to view the full Annulus, Bryce Canyon

Ralph and I decided to make a pilgrimage to southern Utah to see a rare annular eclipse that had its maximum along a corridor including Bryce Canyon. Fittingly, I rented a Mitsubishi Eclipse for the journey. We started in Salt Lake City, making stops at Little Sahara sand dunes to place a time lapse camera, at the ranch in Grover to sleep and test the solar telescope (see the sunspots?), then on the amazing Highway 12 through Boulder and Escalante to Bryce Canyon. We hiked the Navajo Loop/Queen's Garden trail while waiting for the eclipse. The event itself was well attended, and we met people from all over, including India. It grew spectacularly dark. The next day, we drove over Cedar Breaks on the way to Las Vegas, where we collected some time lapse cameras on a playa. It was a strong addition to a long string of great western desert road trips.

I tried my hand at a couple of Bryce anaglyphs:
