Hike across the Rincons, May 06
Thanks to the idea and planning by Jason, eight of us enjoyed a 4-day hike
across the Rincon mountains east of Tucson. We approached from the east side of
the range, via Happy Valley. We ascended to our first campsite in the saddle
below Rincon Peak, with some of us dropping packs and summitting that evening.
We all slept with food in bear boxes close by, then headed north up the saddle toward
Mica Peak and Manning Camp the second night. Lucky for us, there was water
there, but we were rationing a bit before that. Reluctant to leave the cool,
forested summit, we descended partway down the Tanque Verde Ridge, then were
diverted to the north to Douglas Spring campsite, complete with large, black
rattlesnake. The next morning saw us up at the *butt-crack* of dawn to beat the
heat low in the valley on our exit. The walk down into the Sonora desert was
stunning, especially with all the white saguaro flowers.
