Description

The Chiricahua National Monument is located near Wilcox, about 120 miles southeast of Tucson. Maps to the park and of the trails in the park are available Here. The interesting rock features in the monument began to form 27 million years ago when a huge volcanic eruption laid down a thick layer of ash that, due to heat and pressure, formed into solid rock. That rock cracked as it cooled, and was subsequently eroded into the many spires, columns, and balancing rocks throughout the area. In addition to its interesting geology, the Chiricahuas are also a haven for many species of plants and animals.

We started from the Echo Canyon trailhead and did a full loop including the Heart of Rocks and Inspiration Point trails. The total distance was 9.3 miles with about 1000 feet elevation difference between the lowest and highest points, but the trail went up and down a lot so the total amount of climbing was probably almost double that.
