Description

The Chiricahua National Monument is located near Wilcox, about 120 miles southeast of Tucson. Maps to the park and of the trails in the park are available Here. The interesting rock features in the monument began to form 27 million years ago when a huge volcanic eruption laid down a thick layer of ash that, due to heat and pressure, formed into solid rock. That rock cracked as it cooled, and was subsequently eroded into the many spires, columns, and balancing rocks throughout the area. In addition to its interesting geology, the Chiricahuas are also a haven for many species of plants and animals.

Monica's friend Collin was visiting and I suggested the Chiricahuas as one of the coolest hiking/nature spots in southern AZ. We started from the Echo Canyon trailhead and took the Ed Riggs, Mushroom Rock, and Big Balanced Rock trails into the Heart of Rocks loop, then back out the same way. The total distance was 7.3 miles with about 600 feet elevation difference between the lowest and highest points, the highest being around 7000 feet.
