Day 1: South Kaibab to Clear Creek

Starting around 6:30 am, I hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel Campgrounds and Phantom Ranch, which was 7 miles with a 4800 foot vertical descent. I got down there about 10:30, and by that time it was already over 95 degrees in the shade! I had to camp at least 2 miles away from there along the Clear Creek trail (that was where I had a permit for), but didn't want to tackle that sun-exposed stretch at high noon, so I curled up on a bench under a tree and napped till ~2:30. It was starting to cool down (in a relative sense) by then, so I took off on the Clear Creek Trail. It was a 1250' climb up from Phantom Ranch, but after that it wasn't too bad. There were some shady spots in side canyons along the trail for breaks, and I figured I'd try to get as close to Clear Creek as possible before setting up camp. I was making reasonable progress and my legs were still holding up, so I actually managed to make it the full 9 miles to Clear Creek just as the sun went down. Then I made dinner and passed out for 10 hours straight.
