Monaco and Cannes
May 20-22, 2005

Description

It was a busy weekend on the Cote d'Azur, with both the Monaco Grand Prix and the end of the Cannes Film Festival. Morby and I went to Monaco on Friday hoping to see the cars being checked for compliance with the race regulations, but unfortunately that was moved to another day. It was still pretty cool, as we got to walk around the racetrack (which is basically just the main roads through town with a lot of barriers added) and see the insane wealth that pervades Monaco. I've never seen more Ferraris and Lamborghinis in my life, and the boats people own there are insane. If your boat is big enough to have a party with a live band on it, you've got a lot of money. If your boat is big enough that it contains several small boats and has a place to land helicopters, you've probably got too much money. On Saturday, I went to Cannes to check out the scene at the last day of the film festival there. Lots of crowds hoping to see someone famous. On Sunday, I went to a place down the hill from where Morby lives to see the Grand Prix in Monaco (he lives in a town just north that overlooks Monaco). It was amazingly loud even from where we were watching, so I can't imagine what it was like in the stands.

Walking down the racetrack through Monaco. Unfortunately, all of the pictures from that night came out blurry because it was dark.

One of the many insanely expensive cars around Monaco. The yellow thing in the lower left corner is an identical car parked next to this one.

They had giant TV screens showing what's going on inside the place where the ceremonies were held.

I happened to be standing next to this at one point.

Part of Cannes near the port where I ate dinner. It was nice here away from the crowds.

A petanque tournament. It's kind of like bocce, but if you called it that you'd probably have petanque balls thrown at you.

Beach-front movie theater. They show free movies here at night, but I didn't want to deal with the lack of seating and the enormous crowds that gather for them.

For some reason, all along the Cote d'Azur, there's a lot of Native American street performers.

Who says that the French don't appreciate American culture? Note: I didn't go to this place.

This is the view of Monaco and the coast from Morby's patio. He lives in a town called la Turbie, which is in the hills above Monaco.

Wide view of Monaco. The part of the track we could easily see is to the left of the port. We had binoculars for really close-up views. Even without them, the view was pretty good.

Close-up of that part of the track. The cars go up the left road at about 300 km/hr, head off past the casino, go through the tunnel under the hotel, and emerge on the road on the right. The rest of the track runs more-or-less along the port, but is obscured by buildings from where we watched.

Cars coming out of the tunnel and rounding the really sharp turn by the port. There were some good passing maneuvers on this turn.
