Tour de France Stage 12
July 14, 2005 (Bastille Day!)

Description

This stage of the Tour de France was ending in Digne-les-Bains, which is about a 2.5 hour drive from Nice, so I went with several people from the Observatory to check it out. We stopped in a neat old town called Entrevaux to visit the old fort there and buy picnic supplies, then went up to a place south of Digne to watch the race. When we got there, we realized that the road we wanted to go to (a steep, narrow mountian road) had been closed to traffic long before we arrived, but looking at a map we had, we thought we found a shortcut to it on another road/trail. In the end, the 'road' basically ended and we turned around and went back to another spot to watch the race, which still turned out to be pretty cool.

Lance Armstrong was in the yellow jersey for this stage, and ended up keeping it. It was nice to see an American wearing the yellow jersey on Bastille Day!

Are you sure we're supposed to go down this dark, unmarked tunnel?

The tour was preceeded by the 'Caravan,' which was basically a bunch of decorated cars and weird vehicles passing out free stuff.

There was a group of 7 riders a minute after Moncoutie, which I didn't get a picture of, then this group of 5 a few minutes later

More pictures of the peloton as it passes. See if you can pick out any riders you know.
