Murren, Switzerland
March 13-18, 2005

Description

The Swiss Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics holds a school/workshop every year on a different topic. This year, it focused on comets and the Kuiper belt, and was held in Murren, a small ski village in the Swiss Alps that can only be reached by train or cable-car. I drove there with Alessandro Morbidelli, who I'm working with in Nice and who was also giving many of the lectures. I've been to a lot of interesting places for conferences, but I think that this one wins the prize!

Something tells me that this road leads to Switzerland.

This is Lauterbrunnen, the town where we parked the car and took the train to Murren.

This is the train to Murren. I've never seen anything like it before. Since the track was at a 45-degree angle, the train was as well. It was pulled up the track by a cable.

Ingenious Swiss luggage-transfer machine. This took our stuff from the angled train and put it on a regular train that took us the rest of the way to Murren.

View towards the east. The leftmost peak is called Eiger, and according to Alessandro, is the reason that mountian climbing is no longer an Olympic sport. It is notoriously difficult. For the Berlin Olympics, Hitler wanted to make sure that the Germans won, so for practice the German team attempted to climb it. They got stuck, then the team sent to rescue them got stuck as well and nobody survived.

Another view towards the west. There's a cable-car tower in the center and a station in the upper right, called Birg, that's over 1 kilometer away from the tower. There's another cable car from Birg to the Schilthorn, the highest point directly accessable from Murren. I went up there later in the week.

There isn't anything on this menu that I would eat, but I found the middle item interesting.

We took another cable car from Birg to the Schilthorn, which had a great 360-degree view of the area. It was used for the filming of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," and was called "Piz Gloria" for the movie.

It wouldn't be Switzerland without a fondue party!
