Description

Sycamore Canyon is just north of the AZ/Mexico border, west of Nogales. The Canyon has a perennial stream, and is a major migratory corridor for birds and other animals. It hosts over 600 species of plants, and over 100 species of birds, making it one of the most biologically diverse areas in all of Arizona. Given its location along the border, it is also sometimes used by illegal immigrants as a way into the US. We didn't see anyone passing through this time, but I did the first time I hiked there.

The trail is about 5 miles long and ends in a barbed-wire fence at the border that has supposedly been knocked down by either cattle or people. I have yet to make it as far as the border, so maybe on the next hike!

The Forest Service website with info about the trail is here, and photos from my first hike in the Canyon are here.

Remnants of the Civil War-era homestead of Hank Hewitt and Yank Bartlett, which is right near the trailhead. Their ranching effort didn't last too long, as the Indians in the area were not too happy with their presence and attacked the homestead.

There was lots of moss on the rocks, not a common sight in southern AZ

This section required some climbing/scrambling to get through, and fortunately didn't result in anyone falling into the water!

Neat cliffs in the distance as we emerged from the Canyon, and there were many more like this on the drive out. This part of Southern AZ is very scenic!
