Description

Mt. Whitney (~14,500' elevation) is in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and is the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. We camped at Whitney Portal (~8,300') the night before the hike, and took the Mt. Whitney Trail to the summit and back over 3 days, staying 2 nights at Trail Camp (~12,000'). The total distance was about 22 miles, with over 6,000 feet of elevation gain. We carried our full packs up to Trail Camp, but from there we were able to go to the summit and back with just daypacks.

On the first afternoon at Trail Camp, we got rained and hailed on for a few hours before we got a chance to set up our tents, but fortunately the sun came back out and we were able to dry everything off. The weather for the rest of the trip was much nicer!

The forest service web page for Mt. Whitney is here, and the Wikipedia page has a lot of info and links as well. For those interested in the hike, permits from the Forest Service are required. You need to carry and store your food in bear resistant canisters, and pack out all of your poop!

This says the elevation is 14,496', but I think recent measurements are closer to 14,505'
