Mars Art Project

Background
An art project (Mission: Mars) was conceived to bring together planetary scientists, artists, and musicians to create an art show with Mars as its topic. Jonathan Crumpler (art) and Mark Vigorito (music), and I, after discussing how people perceived Mars over the years, opted to create a display which examined various perceptions of Mars. We chose to look at Mars from standpoints of ancient Greco-Roman mythology, modern mythology (as perpetuated by Hollywood), the current scientific approach to exploration, and humanity's intentions for the future. Jonathan used an emulsion technique (which I know nothing about) to form collages of images, Mark composed short musical segments for each piece, and I mosaicked several Mars Pathfinder images together to create a view of what someone standing on the martian surface may see (that is, if observer's retinal image is stretched, passed through a noise removal filter, and generally fudged with before being passed to the brain).
