Izamal and Jungle Ruins

 image
Izamal is a small town in the middle of a ruin-rich area. The buildings are all yellow and in Spanish colonial style. There's a large monastery in the center of town made from stones taken for the nearby Mayan pyramid. The Mayan pyramid is enormous though and still domnates the town.

We stayed at the Macan, a great rustic resort, where we met the Thompson's, a family from Point Barrow Alaska. Together, on the advice of the inn-keepers, we made arrangements for a tour of jungle ruins with Mr. Estaban. We're shown riding out to ruins in the back of a truck.

Mr. Estaban is a proud Mayan with a thousand stories about his ancestors and the local jungle.

We had to hike through thick jungle to reach the ruins. The way was paved by Mr. Estaban's colleague with a sharp machete.

This is what the ruins look like before they are restored. In fact, the jungle is full of unexcavated ruins. We also saw ancient grave sites.
