Mapping Impact Melt around a Young Lunar Crater

In this project, I am mapping impact melt around the crater Giordano Bruno. Lunar impact melt is the melted portion of the Moon that is liquefied when an impactor strikes the surface. The distribution of impact melt can inform us about the where to send future sample return missions.

Silicate Liquid Immiscibility in a Lunar Basalt

We studied a lunar basalt from the Apollo 12 mission and found that it likely underwent silicate liquid immiscibility. This is when a magma splits into two liquids spontaneously. It affects where you would expect to find certain minor minerals.

Mare South of Aristarchus Plateau

We studied the mare basalts south of Aristarchus Plateau on the Moon using crater size-frequency distributions and found that this region is one of the youngest mare units on the Moon, and may be composed of several different lava flows of varying ages.

"You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty." – Edgar Mitchell
