- Description:
- Abstract:
- An orthoimage is remotely-sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation have been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. The Landsat Mosaic orthoimagery database contains Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery for the conterminous United States. The more than 700 Landsat scenes have been resampled to a 1-arc-second (approximately 30-meter) sample interval in a geographic coordinate system using the North American Horizontal Datum of 1983. Three bands have been selected from the eight spectral bands available for each frame. These are bands 4 (near-infrared), 3 (red), and 2 (green), typically displayed as red, green, and blue, respectively. The image is a full-resolution (spectral and spatial), 24-bit color-infrared composite that simulates color infrared film as a "false color composite".
- Purpose:
- These data have been created as a result of the need for having geospatial data immediately available and easily accessible in order to provide geographic reference for Federal, State, and local emergency responders, as well as for homeland security efforts. Orthoimages also serve a variety of purposes, from interim maps to field references for earth science investigations and analysis. The digital orthoimage is useful as a layer of a geographic information system. This data can be used to provide reference information for Web browsers and for map applications at a scale of 1:100,000 or smaller. Larger scale orthoimagery such as digital orthophoto quadrangles will be more accurate, but often at the expense of timely updates.

- Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
- The Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) was designed to provide a geometric accuracy of at least 250 meters (1 sigma) in low-relief areas at sea level. Terrain Correction (Level 1T) includes radiometric, geometric, and precision correction, as well as the use of a digital elevation model (DEM) to correct parallax error due to local topographic relief.
- Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
- Attribute_Accuracy_Value: 0.5
- Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
- There are three on-board solar calibrators to provide an absolute accuracy of 5 percent.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
- All seamlines and tile edges are visually inspected. This check ensures balanced radiometry, and no VOID areas or anomalies. The L7 Data Quality Team at EROS issues Calibration Parameter Files (CPFs) containing over 15,000 coefficients that describe the radiometric and geometric characteristics of Landsat 7 data.
- Completeness_Report:
- The database contains more than 700 Landsat scenes which have been resampled to a 1-arc-second (approximately 30-meter) sample interval in a geographic coordinate system using the North American Horizontal Datum of 1983. The number and timing of images added will vary with cloud cover, the need for more current data, and budget constraints.

- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
- The Landsat ETM+ sensor is a nadir-viewing, eight-band multispectral scanning radiometer that detects spectrally filtered radiation from several portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) sensor includes a 15-meter (m) panchromatic band (band 8), as well as improved resolution (60 m) for the thermal infrared band (band 6). All bands have two gain settings (high and low) for increased radiometric sensitivity and dynamic range, with band 6 acquired in both high and low gain for all scenes.

- Process_Step:
- Process_Description:
- Three bands are selected from the 8 spectral bands that are provided for each path and row frame. These three bands provide a 24-bit color composite. As with other layers, pyramid layers are built that provide map services to be rendered at 2,4,8,16,32,64,128 and 256 arc-second resolution. A technique was developed to strip overlap and sidelap areas, and assign each pixel to a single path and row. The orthoimage layer is created to be consistent with the existing layers in the database, including the National Elevation Dataset (NED), NED shaded relief, the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD), selected names from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), and state and county boundaries.

Zoom tools are available that can be used to investigate areas of interest on the map interface. The download tool allows the customer to capture layers from the map, utilizing the Seamless Data Distribution System process for downloading. A request summary page is then generated with the download layers listed. By clicking the "download" button on the summary page, a zipped file will be generated that can be saved on the customer's computer. The file can then be unzipped and imported into various user software applications.
