Overview

Building on the success of the 2015 field campaign, the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) has established an annual field workshop program, and for the 2016 we will be returning to Laki and Holuhraun to examine the characteristcs of the two largest historical flood lava eruptions in Iceland. The core of this year’s campaign is supported by the W. M. Keck Foundation, with additional participants taking part from the Columbia University, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), University of Arizona, and University of Iceland.

The program for the summer will involve an initial staging in Reykjavík, from July 12 to July 14, and then work at Laki from July 14 to July 26. From there we will relocate to Holuhraun, staying in Mývatn on the evening on July 26, and at Drekki (the closest campsite near Honuhraun) from July 26 to August 4. We will return to Reykjavík on August 4. Those participating in only the Holuhraun portion of the field campagin are encourganged to arrive in Reykjavík on July 24, but later than July 25, as there will be a sheduled departure to Mývatn in the early morning of July 26. Participants may shedule a departure from the Keflavík Airport on August 5, but not before; however, team members are encouraged to stay until August 8.

Participation fees are $5000 for the full workshop (July 12 to August 8), or $4000 for the Holuhraun portion only (July 24 to August 8). Fees will not be prorated if a participant does not stay for the full window of time as the vechiles and accomodations are already reserved for the full duration of the campagin. These fees include ground transportation from Reykjavík to the field and back to Reykjavík as well as all food, lodging, and fuel costs. The fees do not include airfare to and from Iceland, nor ground transportation to and from the Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík. The workshop infrastructure will include all cooking equipment, generators, scientific instruments, and permits required in the field; however, each participant is expected to provide thier own personal equipment and camping gear. Payments can be made by purchase order directly or by check made payable to the University of Arizona.
