The Department of Planetary Sciences and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory are housed in the Kuiper and Sonett Space Sciences buildings on the east side of campus, and in the Phoenix Mission Building on Sixth Avenue between Adams and Drachman, northwest of campus. Planetary Sciences (PtyS) is the name of the academic department, while the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) is the name of the research enterprise; together they comprise The Department of Planetary Sciences and Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, part of the College of Science at the University. While PtyS and LPL are not the same, most faculty in the Department also belong to LPL, and the terms Department and LPL are often used interchangeably.
The Kuiper Space Sciences building is located on the east end of the campus Mall, east of Cherry Street, between the Flandrau Planetarium and the Gittings Center. The Sonett Space Sciences Building is also located on the UA Mall, at the northwest corner of Cherry Street and the Mall. The main entrance for each building is from the Mall (University Blvd.), and visitor parking is located one block north, in the metered spaces along the north side of Hawthorne Street east of Cherry.
The Phoenix Mission Building, at 1415 N. Sixth Avenue, has free parking available in front of the main entrance at the northwest corner of Sixth Avenue and Drachman Street.
