Curson Travel Award

The Shirley D. Curson Education Plus Fund in Planetary Sciences and LPL (formerly the Shandel Education Plus Fund) was established by Shirley Curson, a generous donor and friend of LPL, for the purpose of supporting travel expenses outside the state of Arizona during summer break. The award is open to students in the Department of Planetary Sciences and Lunar and Planetary Laboratory who propose to fund study, museum visits, special exhibits, seminars, instruction, competitions, research and other endeavors that are beyond those provided by the normal campus environment and are not part of the student’s regular curriculum during the recipient’s school year.

How to Apply: 

Award announcement is made in the spring; application deadline is typically late March. 

Award Eligibility:

Graduate majors and undergraduate minors in the Department of Planetary Sciences/Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. The Curson Education Plus Fund in Planetary Sciences and LPL was established to support travel expenses outside the State of Arizona during summer break for undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Science's Department of Planetary Sciences and Lunar and Planetary Sciences, with regard to study, museum visits, special exhibits, seminars, instruction, competitions, research and other endeavors that are beyond those provided by the normal University of Arizona campus environment and are not part of the student's regular curriculum during the recipient's school year. Recipient should have completed at least the junior year of school and be returning to the University of Arizona for the following semester.

Award amounts & Award process:

The award is given annually. Award amount varies. Recipients are selected the Department Head and Director. By October 1 following the summer in which the travel occurs, the recipient must submit an activities report to the head of the Department of Planetary Sciences.

Application materials will include:

a) 1-3 page explanation of the travel/meeting proposed;

b) letter of invitation from the institution(s) at which the student will study and/or announcement(s) of the program(s) in which the student will participate;

c) short budget;

d) letter of support from a member of the PTYS/LPL faculty.

The name of the recipient will be announced in late April.
