The Peter W. Likins Graduate Fellowship Award

In recognition of his outstanding vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to diversity and excellence, the Board of Directors of the University of Arizona Foundation has established a permanent endowment in honor of the 18th President of the University of Arizona, Peter "Pete" Likins. Award recipients will be first or second year graduate students (international or domestic) who have, due to circumstances of whatever nature, overcome substantial adversity to be accepted for admission by a degree granting graduate program (masters or doctoral) at the University of Arizona (UA). In addition to illustrating the adverse circumstances that were overcome, candidates will be evaluated based on their ability to express themselves with passion and vitality. Selection shall be determined by the Dean of the UA Graduate College, based on recommendations of the review committee. Finalists will participate in personal interviews as part of the review process. Applicants MUST be nominated by their UA academic unit (one per UA graduate major program only). Applicants may NOT apply directly.

How to Apply:

Eligibility:

  1. First or second year (at time of application) degree-seeking graduate student admitted to a UA degree-granting major,
  2. May be a masters or doctoral level candidate,
  3. May be domestic or international, and
  4. Must be in good academic standing.

Application:

  1. Cover sheet stating name, UA student ID, academic program, email, and local address and phone (if available).
  2. Cover letter of nomination from the UA academic unit head or director of graduate studies (one per degree granting program).
  3. Two to three (2-3) page essay about the adverse circumstances that have been overcome in order to pursue the dream of attaining a masters or doctoral degree at the UA.
  4. Short summary (no more than 1 page) of why the applicant is interested in pursuing the higher degree.
  5. One (1) letter of recommendation from a UA faculty advisor.
  6. Nominating department to send application as one pdf including letter of recommendation to Dorian Voorhees, Assistant Dean, Graduate College, Administration Building room 322, or voorhees@grad.arizona.edu(link sends e-mail)

Award Eligibility:

April 30, 2018 for 2018-19 academic year award

Award amounts & Award process:

$10,000 plus full tuition, excluding miscellaneous fees and student health insurance.
